Educational Milestones for a 3-Year-Old Child

Getting in pre-schools means having good fine and gross motor skills and cognitive skills. These skills lay a strong foundation during younger years. Many parents are often confused about the academic milestones of a 3 year old. So, today let’s help address the question ” What academic concepts should a 3 years old know?

1. Pre-Writing Skills

What are Pre-Writing skills?

Pre-writing skills are the basic skills a child needs to develop before he/she is able to write. These skills play an important role in kid’s ability to hold a pencil, draw, write and color.

A major part of pre-writing skills are the pre-writing lines and shapes. The pre-writing strokes are the most common lines which are used to firm letters and numbers. These are namingly Standing lines, sleeping lines, slanting lined and curved lines.

Why are Pre-writing skills important?

Pre-writing skills are vital for the kid to be able to grasp a pencil and move it fluently to write. If these skills are underdeveloped it can result in frustration and resistance for writing which may ultimately lead to low self esteem and academic performance.

2. Basic Letter Recognition

Basic letters or alphabets recognition begins from a very early age through medium of videos, rhymes and books.As the kid learns to speak he automatically develops an understanding of letter sounds. Hence at the age of 3 a kid should be familiar with 26 alphabets along with their sounds. These sounds are called phonemic awareness and is a must to be able to begin to read through phonics.

Second concept which a kid of 3 years should be aware of is Weathers. The basic ones he/she should learn are Sunny, Rainy, Cloudy, Stormy.

Third, is the Action words(verbs) like eat, sleep, play, jump, read etc. These are the words which are used in day to day life so they automatically form a part of his/her vocabulary.

Fourth concept which a child should know at 3 is about feelings and emotions. Happy, sad, angry, crying etc. They come naturally to them as they begin to develop socially and emotionally by the age of 3 years.

Fifth, they should also be aware of some of the basic opposites like short and tall, big and small etc.
